Disaster Risk Reduction Workshop (26-28 June, 2006)

Summary

Strengthening the UN System's capacity to play a strategic role in reducing disaster risk was the goal of a three-day UNDP workshop on 26-28 June in Bangkok, Thailand. Joined by colleagues from UNDP and other UN agencies (OCHA, ISDR, UNICEF, UNFPA and the World Bank), the immediate outcome of the workshop was the development of country team action plans to integrate DRR into emergency response, disaster recovery, and development programming, using principles, tools and resources within the context of the UN mandate for Disaster Risk Reduction. Purpose and Outcome

The purpose of the three-day workshop was to find ways to strengthen the capacity of the UN System to play a strategic role in reducing disaster risks. By the end of the workshop, participants outlined key actions to initiate a process to integrate DRR into their country programme's emergency response, disaster recovery, and development programming by using principles, tools and resources within the context of the UN mandate for Disaster Risk Reduction.

Topics, Methodology and Materials

This Workshop was interactive, based on clearly defined session objectives. Disaster Risk Reduction specialists made presentations while exercises took place to integrate what was learned during the session workshops into an overall country plan.
